Die britische Künstlerin Emma Stibbon (*1962) hat einige der vergänglichsten Landschaften der Welt in ihren Zeichnungen festgehalten. Sie hat unter anderem die Eislandschaften der Arktis und Antarktis dokumentiert, die sie im Rahmen mehrerer Expeditionen kennengelernt hat. Sie bereiste 2013 die antarktische Halbinsel an Board der HMS Protector (Künstlerbegleitung für das Scott Polar Research Institute und die Royal Navy). Später im gleichen Jahr bereiste sie die Küste von Svalbard mit der Künstlerorganisation The Arctic Circle.
Ein zentrales Motiv für Stibbon ist die Idee der Vergänglichkeit bestimmter Orte und die Art und Weise, wie wir diese wahrnehmen und erinnern. »Ich bin daran interessiert«, sagt die Künstlerin, »wie etwas scheinbar Monumentales fragil und gefährdet sein kann.«
Die skulptural anmutenden Eisformationen, dessen Formen sich im Meer verlieren, die hell gegen die Nacht leuchtenden Eisberge und die von Wolken umgebenen gewaltigen Bergrücken beschwören den von der Romantik geprägten Begriff des ›Erhabenen‹.
Drawings, new productions
In her drawings, the British artist Emma Stibbon (*1962) has recorded some of the most ephemeral landscapes in the world. Among other things, she has documented the icy landscapes of the Arctic and Antarctic, which she got to know in the framework of several expeditions. In 2013, she traveled to the Antarctic peninsula on board the HMS Protector (artistic accompaniment for the Scott Polar Research Institute and the Royal Navy). Later in the same year, she traveled along the coast of Svalbard with the artists’ organisation The Arctic Circle.
One of Stibbon’s essential motifs is the notion of the transitoriness of certain places and the manner in which we perceive and remember this fact. ‘I am interested,’ says the artist, ‘in how something apparently so monumental can be fragile and endangered.’
The ice formations which resemble sculpture and whose forms become lost in the ocean, the icebergs shining brightly against the night and the massive, mountainous ridges surrounded by clouds summon up the concept of the ‘sublime’ brought to expression by Romanticism.
