Marja Helander (*1965) ist eine finnische Fotografin und Videokünstlerin mit samischen Wurzeln. Ihre Arbeiten fokussieren auf die Identität der Samen als einziges indigenes Volk in Europa und ihren Lebensraum zwischen Finnland, Norwegen, Schweden und Russland am nördlichen Polarkreis. In ihrem Video Birds in the earth tanzen zwei junge Ballettänzerinnen durch die nordische Landschaft. Humorvoll erobern sie tanzend das Land, wechselnd zwischen Tutu und samischer Tracht. Der Tanz endet vor dem finnischen Parlament, wo die Tänzerinnen symbolisch sterben.

Ohne explizit Schnee oder Eis zu thematisieren, ist die verschneite Landschaft natürlicher Lebensraum der Samen und Teil ihrer Identität. Im Video wird die verschneite Landschaft zur Bühne für die Tänzerinnen und das Land wird auf friedliche Weise (wieder)angeeignet.

Marja Helander (*1965) is a Finnish photographer and video artist with roots among the Sámi people. Her works focus on the identity of the Sámi as the sole indigenous people in Europe and on their living space between Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia along the northern Polar Circle. In her video Birds in the earth, two young ballerinas dance their way through the northern landscape. They humorously conquer the terrain through their dancing, alternating between tutu and traditional Sámi dress. The dance ends in front of the Finnish Parliament, where the dancers symbolically die.

Without snow or ice being explicitly thematised, the snow-covered landscape is the natural living space of the Sámi and a part of their identity. In the video, the snowy landscape becomes a stage for the dancers, and the land is (re-)appropriated in a peaceful manner.
